WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS

As one of Special Olympics Canada’s largest funding partners, and with local fundraising initiatives on hold, Special Olympics athletes need our support more than ever.

For many of them, Special Olympics is not just about sport, or staying fit and healthy, but also about providing a social network, a sense of belonging and a valuable source of stability – all essential to their mental and physical health.

The funds we have raised in the past have already helped Special Olympic chapters in pivoting to a virtual model that supports athletes’ physical and mental health.

Our goal for this year is to raise the important funds needed in order to ensure that all Special Olympics programs can return stronger than ever, and that no athlete is left behind.

We hope to see you on September 26th!

  •   Standard Teams will appoint a Team Captain to recruit friends, family or colleagues to join them. Each participant will pay the $50 registration fee and work together to reach the team fundraising goal.
  •   Corporate Teams will appoint a Team Captain who will recruit colleagues to participate in Marathon of Sport. The organization will donate the cost of the team fundraising goal and the registration fee will be waived for all participants.

Team fundraising goals are specific to each motionball Chapter across Canada. To learn more about the motionball event nearest you, click here.

Yes! To register as an individual – please click here, select the city nearest you and Team “Free Agents”

Marathon of Sport events will begin with Opening Ceremonies – welcoming Teams and celebrating the local Special Olympics athletes. Participants will then compete in 6-8 different low contact sports. The event will end with a brief Closing Ceremonies and may be followed by an After Party at a local venue.

Working alongside the local Special Olympics Provincial Chapter, motionball will introduce Team Captains to local Special Olympics athletes when you arrive onsite at the event! These athletes will then be a part of your Team and you will have the opportunity to play alongside them for the day!

If you know a Special Olympics athlete, and would like to have them join your team, please connect with your local Committee!

We love it when local businesses get involved with motionball! They can get involved in three ways – either as donors, sponsors or participants! Click here to connect with our National Office and get more information.

What’s the difference?

DONORS → An organization that makes a financial donation to the Marathon of Sport event is eligible to receive a charitable tax receipt. If you have a company that wants to make a donation by cheque, connect them with the motionball office. All cheques should be made out to motionball for Special Olympics. If a donor is making an ‘in-kind’ donation, meaning they are donating a prize or certificate of some sort, motionball can create a business receipt for them.

SPONSORS → Sponsors contribute financially to the event in return for being recognized as a sponsor or a partner. If you know of a local organization who wants to sponsor your local Marathon of Sport or sponsor a sport station, get in touch with the motionball National Office.  If a company is sponsoring the event that means they are not eligible for a charitable tax receipt (as per CRA regulations).

CORPORATE TEAMS → The organization can register a corporate team with up to 10 employees. By registering as a Corporate Team, the $50 registration will be waived for all of your team members so there is no upfront cost for them to participate. Your organization will also receive online and onsite logo recognition. This is a great team building and employee engagement opportunity.

Each Marathon of Sport event is different – for more information about an After Party at your local event, click here to find your closest city.

No problem! We’re sad they aren’t able to join us but that will not affect you and the rest of your Teammates ability to participate.

If you are able to recruit someone to fill this spot, they will need to register and sign the waiver which they can do online through this link marathonofsport.com.

If you want to get more involved, please contact either your local Marathon of Sport Committee or the motionball National Office to find opportunities available for you! Thank you so much for your involvement and we look forward to working with you.

Choose the motionball community closest to you and register a Team for that event! We will ensure that any funds raised by you and your Teammates are directed back to your community specifically.

Your friends are welcome to participate in Marathon of Sport once they register! This is a great way to get friends involved, you can create a team and set a goal together to fundraise for your group and earn incentives. Click here to begin the registration process.

We do hope that motionballers will continue to fundraise. Our friends, the local Special Olympics athletes are eager to get back on the playing field and your fundraising efforts will help to ensure that no SO athlete is left behind when programming returns.

We love it when local businesses get involved with motionball! They can get involved in 3 ways – either as donors, sponsors or participants!

CORPORATE TEAMS → The organization can put in a corporate team with as many employees as they’d like! By registering as a Corporate Team, you will have access to the Corporate Challenge (link to Corp Challenge section) platform to engage all of your employees in the weeks leading up to Marathon of Sport.

Yes! More information on this will be provided prior to the event.

No problem! We’re sad they aren’t able to join us but that will not affect you and the rest of your Teammates ability to tune in and follow along with our broadcast!

If you are able to recruit someone to fill this spot, they will need to register and sign the waiver which they can do online through this link marathonofsport.com.

If you want to get more involved, please contact either your local Marathon of Sport Committee or the motionball National Office.

Choose the motionball Community closest to you and register a Team for that event! We will ensure that any funds raised by you and your Teammates are directed back to your Community specifically.

Your friends are welcome to participate in Marathon of Sport if they register! This is a great way to get them involved. Click here to begin the registration process.

Yes! While we appreciate you consulting this FAQ package first, please don’t hesitate to reach out to anytime. You can always expect an answer within 48hrs!

CORPORATE CHALLENGE

This new initiative allows your employees to stay active at the office or at home in support of Special Olympics athletes across Canada. Just choose your activity goal & time frame, then challenge your team to log physical activity leading up the virtual event on our FREE platform.

Your team will be paired with a local Special Olympics athlete who will be helping you reach your goal, and providing inspiration.. As you get closer to achieving your company-wide goal, your employees will also be met with virtual messages from Special Olympics athletes in each province and territory.

On September 26th, all of your employees and their families can tune in to the Marathon of Sport broadcast  – a 50-minute workout hosted by Olympic Gold medalist Tessa Virtue and her sport celebrity friends. Your team can follow along at home, or in person with colleagues, friends, or family (if it is safe to do so).

motionball will work with you to determine your company’s activity goal, based on how many employees you would like to engage, how long you would like them to log activity for, etc. All activity will be logged on motionball’s easy to use online platform.

The goal for activity can also be set up as a factor of the donation the company is making. For example: For every minute of activity logged by YOUR COMPANY employees from X date to X date, YOUR COMPANY donates $X  to motionball, up to a maximum of your choosing.

There is no minimum fee to participate, and you can determine how much you would like to contribute. However, if your company would like to be recognized as an event sponsor, you can choose from a variety of sponsorship levels.

Fundraising is completely optional. All registered participants will be provided with a personal donation link and fundraising tools automatically. All those who choose to fundraise will be eligible to earn incentives, including Under Armour gear and more.

No! Companies can engage as many employees as they choose! This is a great way to get even MORE people involved with motionball, with no barriers to participate.

Yes! Special Olympics athletes assigned to corporate teams will participate in logging activity and help the team reach their goal. motionball will provide a photo and bio of your athlete(s), which will be on your team’s online dashboard. We encourage all of our corporate teams to connect with athletes virtually in advance and day of the event by email or video conference.

Yes! We encourage friendly competition between companies and their clients, competitors, or even internally between local offices! While each company will have unique goals, you can challenge your peers in many ways: fundraising, activity logged, how many employees are signed up, etc.

FUNDRAISING

With Special Olympics programs and initiatives on hold, our athletes need us more than ever. For many of them, Special Olympics is not just about sport, or staying fit and healthy, but also about providing a social network, a sense of belonging and a valuable source of stability – all essential to their mental and physical health.

Our goal is to raise the important funds needed in order to ensure that all Special Olympics programs can return stronger than ever, and that no athlete is left behind.

Each registered participant will be provided with an individual fundraising link that can be shared with their contacts and networks to collect donations. As participants reach certain fundraising levels, they will be eligible to receive motionball’s branded incentives.

Go to www.marathonofsport.com to register, login, or reset your password.  Your personal fundraising link will be at the top of your dashboard when you sign in!

OUR HISTORY

motionball was founded in 2002 by three brothers – Paul, Mark and Sean Etherington. Growing up, they learned the importance of volunteerism through their parents, who were, and are to this day strong supporters and advocates of the Special Olympics movement. After many years of volunteering at events and coaching  Special Olympics  teams, the brothers decided to connect a cause they were passionate about with their peers. With the help of their friends and professional networks, motionball was born.

The first ever motionball Gala was held in Toronto, raising $45,000 for the cause, and run entirely by volunteers. Marathon of Sport came to be in 2003, and within a few years, the event was replicated in Vancouver, Halifax and Calgary. By 2013 motionball was operating in eight cities across Canada and began expanding to university campuses. By 2015, motionball delivered its first ever annual donation of $1,000,000 to the Special Olympics Canada Foundation.

Today, motionball continues to be a volunteer led organization, with many founding board members (the Etherington Brothers, Graham White and Darcy Montgomery) still volunteering their time to the organization. Mark and Paul Etherington remain heavily involved with the day to day operations acting as volunteer President and Chairman respectively, along with a small and passionate national office staff who support our volunteer Event Directors from coast to coast. Since inception, motionball has donated over $19 million to the Special Olympics Canada Foundation. Our goal in 2024 is to raise $2 million net for SOCF.

Accountability & Governance

motionball is a not-for-profit organization that prides itself on introducing Canadians to the Special Olympics movement through integrated and inclusive sport and social events.  We appreciate there are costs associated with running fundraising events and we are mindful of the investment, however, we also firmly believe our events champion integration and awareness between those with intellectual disabilities and those without.  The greatest tool we have in levelling the playing field and allowing our participants to meet, interact and engage with Special Olympics athletes is by having them spend a day together on the playing fields and creating meaningful relationships through sport.

As an organization, we acknowledge the importance of being good stewards of the dollars donated to motionball and therefore we follow an internal objective to ensure our Marathon of Sport events (which represent 80% of our fundraising totals) keep their event costs to under 20% of gross revenue; and our Gala events at below 50%.

We are proudly a volunteer lead organization. From inception, our Founders, Board Members & Volunteer Event Directors receive no compensation for their considerable time, effort and enthusiasm for making a difference in their communities.

As motionball has grown, so has our professional staff. As of 2024 motionball has 6 full-time employees who support our almost 100 passionate motionball Volunteer Event Directors and the 50+ events hosted throughout the year.  We are committed to a thoughtful investment in our paid team in order to expand motionball’s reach and ultimately increase funding and awareness of Special Olympics in Canada.

In terms of our 2022 Revenue & Expenses:

Gross 2022 Revenue      $2,597,514.00
Gross Event Costs            $834,637.00
Operating Costs              $181,074.00
